Neo-Nazis at the Capitol: Three Years Later

Three years ago today, I was part of a group that organized a resistance to a neo-Nazi demonstration. Under the guise of the South Africa Project, under the guise of the Church of Jesus Christ-Christian, the Aryan Nations organized a march in protest of the "white genocide" happening in South Africa. Their website featured soft focus stock photos of blond blue-eyed white girls and graphic photos of brutalized bodies.

The text told a story of poor white farmers living in terror in post-Apartheid South Africa, but quickly veered into a antisemitic history of South African Reserve Bank explaining how its Jewish capitalist owners conspired with communist Jews to start the African National Congress and the NAACP to marshal Black folks into extinguishing the white race. With a small amount of link clicking, one ended up on the Aryan Nations' main website, which featured flyers promoting holocaust denial and speeches by a preacher who mixed the Christian bible with Hitler's My Struggle.

What they described was but one part of a much broader problem. The global economic recession of 2008 increased economic desperation of the South African working class, leading to a general rise in violent crime. Far from a reactionary war against white people, what the Aryan Nations were actually pointing out was the social results of the periodic but inevitable crises of the capitalist system itself.

That's Dr. Nazi to You

The National Press Club is run by journalists from news outlets as prestigious as Bloomberg and Al-Jazeera. This October it will host a conference of neo-Nazis.

The National Policy Institute’s biennial conference serves as a meet and greet for an array of well-funded affiliates of this ideological bridge going from mass murderers like Dylann Roof and Rusty Houser to windbags like Donald Trump and Ann Coulter.

While the National Press Club defends its decision to host the conference by standing behind its “108 year history representing the values of freedom of speech, freedom of the press,” they seem to ignore that fascism as an ideological position has a 93 year history of opposing freedom of speech and freedom of the press.

FedEx Packages

In keeping with the GOP's attempt to keep up with Donald Trump's fascist appeal, Chris Christie proposed a technocratic "solution" to undocumented immigration. I put solution in scare quotes not because his policy plan is ridiculous, but because I remain unconvinced that undocumented immigration is a problem to be solved. By and large, immigration is a boon for the economy - it tends to positively impact citizens' earnings, has minimal impact on domestic unemployment, and are comparatively less likely to be violent criminals than citizens.

What Christie proposed was a bit silly in its phrasing. Par for the course for Christie. According to Christie 40% of undocumented immigrants are here on expired visas. He proposed that we use FedEx's expertise with tracking packages in order to track human beings. The video is under the cut.

Why the #NoFlagginChallenge Is Actually Really Important

Since Bree Newsome's spiderwoman takedown of the South Carolina statehouse's confederate flag and its subsequent removal through official legislation, a wave of anti-flagging vigilantism has begun.

If you haven't yet seen the #NoFlagginChallenge, the videos below will get you up to speed.

Klansman in the Sheets, Lone Wolf in the Streets

Last Monday, in my "White Pride" Matters Reading List I mentioned that the term "Lone Wolf" did not originate with law enforcement or the media, but rather within the white nationalist movement itself. I was given the opportunity to elaborate on this point in Think Progress the following Wednesday.

The long version is tale of FBI infiltration, social progress, and legal action all bearing down on a violent movement of ideological hatred. The result is a chaotic strategy of coordinated violence in the hands of the most dangerous ideology the world has ever known. From the piece:

Coupled with the return of combat-trained veterans from Vietnam, COINTELPRO led to a qualitative split within white hate organizations. The formal organizations and alternative political parties such as the Klan, the National Socialist Movement, and the Aryan Nations pursued a nominally non-violent white nationalist line. Meanwhile, many members of these organizations began forming underground paramilitary organizations such as the White Patriot Party, Posse Comitatus, and The Order. While there was undeniably a large degree of cross-over between these two camps, both disavowed involvement in the activities of the other.

In the early 1990s, Tom Metzger thought up a new form of organized white nationalist violence. Metzger, who cut his teeth with various chapters of the Klan before dabbling in electoral politics, noticed that militant white nationalist organizations, including his own White Aryan Resistance (WAR), were being taken out through criminal conspiracy charges and civil lawsuits. Through WAR’s newspaper and later its website, he began to advocate for a strategy he called Lone Wolf.

"White Pride" Matters Reader

I have been saying since at least 2012 that we have to be paying serious attention to what Nazis are doing and how they are organizing. In the past three decades, we have seen a huge number of mass shootings in the United States. This climate provides cover for the strategies of White Nationalists.

It is important to recognize that the term "lone wolf" is not a way for law enforcement to distinguish political violence they tacitly approve of from that which they explicitly do not (although they do this in plenty of other ways). Rather the term was coined by White Nationalists themselves to describe a distributed strategy of (accelerating) political violence. Nazis love that woodland imagery and shit. The adoption of this tactic is largely the result of unintended consequences of the FBI's counterintelligence program operating in the early 70's which fractured white hate organizations, drove them underground, and caused them to merge in new (and probably to them, exciting) ways.

What follows is a reading list on the history of White Nationalism in the United States. Given the confusing and perhaps disturbingly compelling nature of fascist writing, I present first a list of scholarly historical, anthropological, and sociological research on White Nationalist activities in the United States.
